Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 Review
If you’re in the market for a high-end phone with a sliding display and are not too bothered about a lack of an app drawer, then Xiaomi’s latest Mi Mix 3 is worth considering.
It’s a slider phone that slides open to reveal two front-facing cameras, a neat trick that lets you use the phone with one hand while still keeping the screen and cameras hidden behind it. It also comes with a handy hardware button to unlock the device when you’re not holding it and can be programmed to launch the camera, change viewing mode or open an app.
Display
The display of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is a 6.4-inch AMOLED panel that offers an impressive 1080p resolution and a stunning screen-to-body ratio. It also comes with a number of valuable features, including a customizable Night mode, Reading mode, and HDR support.
While the display is certainly not the most vibrant on the phone, we can’t deny that it looks imposing, thanks to its lack of bezels. It’s also highly responsive and has excellent viewing angles.
The unique slider mechanism that allows the device to slide down to reveal a dual-lens front camera is a fun and eye-catching design feature that solves one of the major problems facing manufacturers trying to deliver an all-screen smartphone without a notch. It also makes the device incredibly capable, offering top-tier photography performance for a very reasonable price.
Camera
The camera of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is a big step forward from the previous generation and takes some awe-inspiring shots. It’s capable of excellent daytime photos with bright colors popping off the screen, sharp detail, and moderate contrast levels.
It also handles low-light photography exceptionally well, with highlights kept from overexposing and offering more detail than many other phones at this price.
The primary rear camera is dual-lens, with one Sony IMX363 wide-angle lens and one Samsung S5K3M3+ telephoto module. Combining these lenses and f/1.8 and f/2.4 apertures helps keep noise to a minimum, even at night.
Performance
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is a high-end phone that packs the latest hardware into a beautiful design. Its sliding mechanism hides the front-facing camera without a notch and offers a massive screen-to-body ratio.
It also features dual rear cameras and a powerful processor, while the ceramic back enables fast charging. It’s a very different take on slider phones and could split users’ opinions.
The button on the device’s left is a shortcut to various functions, including Google Assistant, the mic, the flashlight, and reading mode. However, you can change what each button does and even disable it altogether.
Battery
The battery of the Mi Mix 3 isn’t the largest by any means, but it’s a solid performer. It’s a 3,200mAh cell that will quickly return a day’s worth of use.
On top of this, there are Quick Charge 4 and 10W wireless charging options. The supplied 18W charger refuels the battery in 30 minutes, while the 10W wireless pad can replenish 0 to 32% of a depleted cell in half an hour.
The battery also has a lot of optimization tools built in, including an app-specific power saver and a scheduling mechanism for power on/off control. These should help it last a few days on a single charge, even if you do some demanding gaming and video consumption.
Software
The Mi Mix 3 is a slider phone designed to stand out from its rivals. Its design is a little distinctive, but this doesn’t make it less enjoyable to use than a similarly priced handset like the Honor Magic 2.
The display itself is pretty good, especially considering the slide-out camera mechanism. There isn’t a notch, and it has no punch-holes around it, making it an excellent choice for viewing content.
The camera is also pretty good and has a great dual-lens setup. Its portrait mode is impressive, and edge detection works well.
